Breaks New Ground

The Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay held a Groundbreaking Ceremony on July 14 for our new Peninsula Resource Center in Salisbury, MD.

GSCB's current building located on Snow Hill Road in Salisbury is being purchased by Two Farms, Inc. After much consideration our Board, staff and Volunteer committee felt that this was an opportunity to move to a better location, design a building that better met our current and future needs as well as increase our visibility in the community.

The new building will be located at East Park Professional Center on Route 50. The Girl Scouts will be conducting a Capital Campaign in order to upgrade the computer equipment, telephone system, alarm system, and purchase some general office furnishings. We would like to thank Two Farms, Palmer Gillis, Tony Gilkerson, Delmarva Power and the Girl Scouts Lower Shore Advisory Council for their financial commitment to this project. For more information about the project or to make a donation please contact 410-742-5107.

This calendar year, the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay will celebrate two remarkable milestones:  the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Girl Scouts of the United States and the 50th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay.

We have developed many exciting new programs and activities for the coming year, which you’ll find in our just-published 2011-2012 Council Program Guide. In our ongoing efforts to protect the environment and conserve resources, we are distributing this year’s Council Program Guide largely electronically instead of on paper.  This shift to “green” distribution will help us to save scores of trees, reduce pollution and costs, and increase convenience.

The 2011-2012 Council Program Guide provides core information on the activities that are currently planned, but we’ll also be distributing emerging program and event updates electronically throughout the year. Please be sure to check our website and your inbox regularly for new additions!

Do something different this year. Go ziplining. Join us as a Volunteer. Connect with leaders and envision a new future. Honor the generations of the past 100 years and shape the way for the Girl Scouts of the future. Take action with us to make the world a better place.

A LETTER FROM GSCB CEO AND BOARD CHAIR
Every Cookie Has A Mission!

hor_line

As plans are well underway for our 2012 Cookie Program, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you information regarding the upcoming Cookie season. As we all know, the Girl Scouts' Cookie Program is the nation's largest entrepreneurial program for girls, teaching them how to run their own Cookie business, honing their marketing and presentation skills, developing their sales techniques, fostering their growth as a leader and encouraging their entrepreneurial spirit. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is a time-honored tradition that many women look back on fondly as part of their Girl Scout experience.

As we all know, inflation affects every segment of our society, which includes the food industry and, inevitably, the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Due to the ever-rising cost of ingredients, packaging and transportation, the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay has made the decision to increase the price of Cookies to $4 per box for the upcoming Cookie season beginning in January 2012. Our Council has not raised the price of Cookies in seven years and we do not make this decision lightly. The GSCB Board of Directors took all of these findings into consideration when they discussed this action at the May Board meeting.

I also ask that you keep in mind how important the Girl Scout Cookie Program is to our girls. My hope for this year is that Girl Scouts of ALL grade levels will participate and reap the rewards that come with it. We welcome any further comments or questions you might have about the 2012 Cookie Program.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

GSCB HONORED
STEM Advocacy Champion

The Girl Scouts of the USA has selected the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay as a STEM Advocacy Champion.  GSUSA’s Public Policy and Advocacy Office in Washington, DC, bestowed the honor upon 17 Girl Scout Councils nationwide for their leadership in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

GSCB is committed to building girls of courage, confidence and character by engaging them in innovative STEM programs and helping them to build leadership skills that last a lifetime. We dedicated our LEED Platinum-Certified Lynn W. Williams Science and Technology Lodge at Camp Country Center in February 2010. The Lodge is the only building of its kind among Girl Scout Councils nationally and was the first commercial building in Delaware to earn the U.S. Green Building Council’s highest rating for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

Since opening in 2009, the Lodge has been the site of numerous STEM workshops and programs for girls. It also is a popular destination for schools, community groups, businesses, and families for environmental education tours and workshops, retreats, receptions and celebrations.

GSUSA’s STEM advocacy initiative helps Girl Scout Councils champion efforts at the state and local level to increase community support for, and girls’ involvement in, STEM programming. Ultimately, each Council’s goal is to serve as a catalyst for positive change on one or more issue(s) impacting girls.
