Cadette Troops 81 & 246 Crayons for Kids Service Project

Troop 81"From Savannah Georgia to the Chesapeake Bay, we hope these Crayons will brighten your day!" read the labels on over 600 boxes of crayons that Cadette Girl Scout Troops #246 & 81 presented in a special ceremony to Heidi Gilligan of the Impatient Children's Wing at Savannah Georgia's Memorial Hospital and Station Number 5 Truck #3 of the Historic Savannah Fire & Rescue Department on Sunday May 20th at the Inn at Ellis Square in Historic Savannah Georgia. The Crayons were collected as part of a year long service project that both troops created to meet the Service Project requirements for one of the many Interest Projects the Girls earned on their Whirlwind trip to Savannah Georgia.

On May 17, 2007 the 14 girls from both troops and their Moms or Grandmothers boarded a Holloway Tour Charter bus bound for Historic Savannah Georgia to visit the Birthplace Museum of Juliette Gordon Low founder of the Girl Scouts. During their stay in sunny Savannah the girls dined at Paula Dean's Lady & Sons restaurant, took a Horse Drawn Carriage Tour of the Haunted Sites in the Historic District, visited the First Girl Scout Head Quarters, had a Formal Black Dress Night, saw Broadway on Bull Street at the Historic Savannah Theater, toured the Andrew Low House, Telfair Museum of Art, and visited many of Savannah famous Statues and Squares.

The troops were one of the first to earn the Inn at Ellis Squares Heartfelt Hospitality Patch Program. They also completed the requirements for Daisy's Neighborhood, a Cadette Interest Project created by the Girl Scout Council of Greater Savannah. Both troop would like to extend their sincere thanks to Cameron Taylor, Manager of the Salisbury Staples store, for donating the Labels and Printing of Labels used for our Crayon Boxes and for the coupons that were donated to help us purchase additional crayons for our project, we would also like to thank all of those in the local community who helped to support our Crayons project and aided in fund raising efforts to make such a memorable Girl Scout experience possible.

Troop 92 Helps Restore Beach Grass on Broadkill Beach

Troop 92 braved a windy beach to help the environment! The beach grass planting is an annual event in Delaware where volunteers plant beach grass in an effort to prevent erosion of the beaches. This event took place on Saturday March 24th, 2007. Troop 92 of Service Unit 2 was assigned to Broadkill Beach Delaware. Our Troop arrived at 10am and planted beach grass until 12 noon. We were given quick instructions on how to plant the fragile grass and off we went. The girls of Troop 92 were complimented by several other volunteers for their hard work. The Troop also received a thank you letter from the president of the Broadkill Beach Preservation Association. It was a cold, windy day at the beach but the girls really enjoyed it.

The 'Fall Crew' of Troop 236Junior/Cadette Troop 236 has joined the ranks of trClearing the big items from the beachoops who are helping the environment!

In the past fall, the troop participated in the Coastal Cleanup sponsored by DNREC.  As a result of this, we were asked by Craig Rhoades, of DNREC to adopt the area we cleaned, part of the Augustine Wildlife area known as Canada's Beach, just north of the town of Port Penn.

The 'Spring Crew' for Troop 236In the fall, we cleaned up a large area including two dozen tires, a set of wooden steps, packing pallets, and about twenty bags of miscellaneous trash.  This area had not been cleaned for a long time. The final CLEAN beach!

This spring we returned to the area and picked up about 8 bags of trash along with some illegal eel traps, some oil globules probably left over from a Delaware River oil spill of last year, and lots and lots of small stuff.

This program, Adopt a Wetland, is available for any scouts who would like to do a service project on an ongoing basis.  It's also a chance to get out in the mud and get DIRTY!!  Which some of us like. ;)

National Council Delegate Invitation

BE A PART OF GIRL SCOUT HISTORY!
Become a Delegate or Alternate to the National Council Session

National Council delegates assume one of the most significant responsibilities in the Girl Scout Movement.

  • They are accountable for preparing carefully for participation in the democratic process;

  • For opening their minds to the opinions and situations of others during the meetings in order to better understand the diversity of perspectives and their impact on Girl Scouting; and finally,

  • For voting as their conscience guides them, keeping foremost in mind the well-being and future development of the entire Girl Scout Movement, not any one particular council or grouping of councils.

  • Delegates serves as members of the National Council for three years and are expected to attend all meetings of the National Council Session.

The Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay are looking for adults and teens (14 years of age and older) to represent our council at the 2008 National Council Session. We will be taking approximately 10-12 Delegates and 2-3 Alternates to the Council Session.

Being a Delegate/Alternate to the National Council Session allows you the opportunity to travel, explore new cities, network with Girl Scout Volunteers, Teen Scouts, National Board Members, and GSUSA staff. The Chesapeake Bay Girl Scout Council pays all expenses for the Council Delegation to the National Council Session.

Learn How to Use Your Voice for Change...

Have you ever wondered how government works and how laws come to be? Come to Delaware Legislative Day on June 12 to find out how government really works from legislators and lobbyists. Find out how an idea becomes a law. Find out how you can use your voice to make change. The program will give you a chance to work with female lobbyists to make an idea into a law, give you the skills to talk to legislators about your concerns, interact with legislators, tour Legislative Hall, and watch a session.

In order to prepare for this day, we are asking Juniors and Teens to tell us what are the top three issues you are facing as young female citizens. We will use the top three during the morning session to hone the collective Girl Scout voice. We have a simple online survey on our website you can use to share your thoughts. So, tell us what YOU think!

Oprah Winfrey Highlights Essence Cares

Oprah Winfrey highlighted the Essence Cares initiative "A Call to Action" on the May 31 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. The initiative seeks to encourage African American adults to support children by serving as mentors and volunteers through youth organizations.

Girl Scouts is among several national youth and mentoring organizations that have partnered with Essence Cares since the summer of 2006. To date, our partnership with Essence Cares has produced some significant opportunities for our organization:

    * The participation of GSUSA and the Girl Scout Council of Northwest Georgia in the official launching of Atlanta Cares, a mentoring pilot program (December 2006).

    * Participation by the Girl Scout Council of Northwest Georgia and other community-based organizations in Atlanta in the planning and execution of the Atlanta Cares mentor recruitment launch, which was held at the Booker T. Washington School on Easter weekend in April 2007. The launch resulted in the recruitment of 700 people who committed to mentor at least one child for at least one year.

    * The publication, free of cost, of a full-page recruitment ad for Girl Scout volunteers in the February 2007 issue of Essence magazine. In the same issue we also published a full-page volunteer profile, "She's Got the Power," on Claudette Lewis, one of San Antonio's most committed African American community leaders and an active Girl Scout volunteer.

    * A hyperlink on the Essence Cares website (www.essencecares.com) that directs the Essence audience to a dedicated volunteer registration form on the Girl Scout website.

In her call to action, Oprah directed viewers to the Essence Cares website, where interested adults can learn more about the initiative, get inspired, and become involved (in a certain way a call to "Discover, Connect, and Take Action").

Spend a day at the beach learning about the United States Life-Saving Service, a pre-cursor to the Coast Guard, and a rich part of American maritime heritage. Take a tour of an actual life-saving station where surfmen lived and worked, and earn your "Historically Speaking Delaware" badge by the end of the day! (for Teens and Juniors)
Cost: $3.50  Minimum participants: 15  Maximum participants: 15

"Lighthouse" Badge Program
The lighthouse is one of the most familiar and romantic symbols in American coastal history. It was also an important means of communicating with mariners who sailed along our coasts, helping them to navigate through dark and dangerous waters. Learn how lighthouses work and why we need them, then cap off the program by creating your own 'edible lighthouse'! This program meets all the requirements for the Lighthouse badge. (for Juniors)
Cost: $5  Minimum participants: 10  Maximum participants: 20

"Beachcomber" Badge Program
From Newcastle to Fenwick Island, Delaware boasts over 22 miles of seaside coastline. Come see and experience the exciting things the Atlantic Ocean has to offer by participating in this beachcombing program. Learn everything you ever wanted to know about seaweed, and find out ways in which you can help protect marine life. (for Juniors)
Cost: $5  Minimum participants: 10  Maximum participants: 20

All programs will be held at the Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum in Delaware Seashore State Park (on Highway One, about 3.5 miles south of Dewey Beach and 1.5 miles north of the Indian River Inlet). There are no set dates yet; we can schedule programs to meet the needs of the group. Groups can schedule by calling 302-227-6991.  Also you can visit us at; http://www.destateparks.com/irlss/index.asp
