Steamin’ Day Fun Patch

GS Daisy through Ambassador
Girl Scouts are encouraged to visit the Marshall Steam Museum during special Steamin’ Day events to complete their Steamin’ Day Fun Patch. Steamin’ Days are special events held the First Sundays, September through November that include the opportunity to ride in historic automobiles and trains. Patches are earned by completing a specified number of activities (dependent on scout level) in our Scout Activity Booklet. Certain activities can be completed at home with the girls’ troop and family while others must be completed during a visit to one of our public Steamin’ Day events. Scouts must bring their completed Scout Activity Booklet.
WHEN: First Sundays of the month, September-November. (September 6, October 4 and November 1).
WHERE: Marshall Steam Museum at Auburn Heights, 3000 Creek Rd., Box 61, Yorklyn, DE 19736
COST: Admission rate to the museum.

Hard Hat Tours

Join us for our "hard hat" tours of the future home of Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay. We will have activity stations for Girl Scouts working towards their "Building the Beacon" patch.

Go Native-Pollinators & Flowers

GS Brownie and Junior
Spend the afternoon at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center exploring the native plants in our Rain Garden and fields for native pollinators. Investigate how flowers are designed to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, beetles and moths. Discover the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly and other insects that share its milkweed host plant. Collect milkweed seeds and learn how to establish a Monarch garden in your yard or neighborhood.
WHEN: September 12, 2015 and May 14, 2016, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Animals in an Estuary

Explore the salt marsh by investigating the plants and animals that call this habitat home. Learn the environmental importance of wetlands and be prepared to get muddy!
WHEN: September 12, 2015 and May 14, 2016, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
WHERE: Indian River Life-Saving Station at Delaware Seashore State Park, 25039 Coastal Hwy., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971
COST: $10 per girl.
NOTE: Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get muddy. Program will meet at the Indian River Life-Saving Station and scouts will need to be transported to the campground area. Most badge requirements will be met for the Junior Animal Habitats badge. Min 10/Max 25.

 

 

Miraculous Monarchs

GS Brownie and Junior
Become a “Citizen Scientist”! Contribute to the Monarch Watch program as you capture, tag and release Monarch butterflies in Ashland Nature Center’s meadows. Visit Ashland’s Butterfly House to witness other late-season butterflies in every life-stage and learn their diverse strategies for coping with winter.
WHEN: September 20, 2015, 1 p.m.– 3:30 p.m.

Hiker

Learn what it takes to have a successful and safe hike. Scouts will learn how to navigate trails, choose the correct hiking gear and explore what types of foods are good for hiking trips. The girls will then use their newfound knowledge and take a hike on the grounds.

H2O - Bay

The Chesapeake and Delaware Bays are a major area for a variety of life. Learn about the aquatic animals in the bay, and the many shore birds that depend on the life in those bays all while learning about conserving water.

Enjoy an afternoon at the zoo during this special program just for scouts! There will be games, live animal encounters, and other activities all geared toward meeting scout badge requirements. Brandywine Zoo fun patch will be available for purchase.

Girl Scout Punkin Fling and Fall Festival

All Girl Scout grade levels, family and friends

Have a fun family day celebrating the fall season. Bring your home made catapult or trebuchet and compete to fling a pumpkin the farthest. Build a scarecrow and enter it in a contest. Bring a batch of chili for our cook-off or bring your box oven for a dessert bake off. Enjoy archery games, arts and crafts and a bonfire on the beach! Bring a friend! Non- Girl Scouts are welcome.

Letterboxing and Geocaching

GS Brownie and Junior
Carve out your own personal stamp and explore the exciting world of letterboxing. Letterboxing is a unique combination of a treasure hunt, navigation, artistic expression and outdoor exploration. Then try your navigation skills to find a series of letterboxes hidden at DEEC. Experience a more technical treasure hunt with geocaching. Practice using a GPS and search the DEEC Garden for hidden treats.

On My Honor Ceremony

To achieve the Girl Scout Gold, Silver and Bronze Award takes dedication, organization and determination. These awards are not easily achieved and the girls who earn them are to be commended. This special girl-led ceremony will honor the Girl Scouts who have achieved their highest grade level awards. We will also acknowledge the commitment of girls who have been a Girl Scout for 10 and 13 years and graduating seniors. Cadettes in grade 8 through Ambassadors who are not being honored are eligible to apply for Mistress of Ceremonies. Visit our On My Honor Ceremony (OMH) page for additional details. Dont forget to pick up something special for your Girl Scout(s) earning their highest awards!

African American Life on the John Dickinson Plantation

Discover the lives of enslaved people and the free African Americans who lived on the John Dickinson Plantation and connect their stories to your life and freedoms. We will explore family trees using clues from the past, try daily chores common on the plantation and create a plantation journal to record our thoughts and experiences.

Wonders of the Night Sky

All Girl Scout grade levels
Use telescopes, binoculars, and the naked eye to observe a crescent moon low in the west, Jupiter rising in Leo, Orion sinking in the south, and other celestial sights. Learn the secret of the North Star and constellations visible year-round. Join the ranks of Citizen Astronomers around the world by participating in the GLOBE at Night project to assess light pollution. If it is cloudy, we will observe the “virtual” sky in Mt. Cuba’s planetarium.

Senses

Who can see better, humans or owls? Brownies will get a sensational sensory experience learning about their senses and using them to learn about nature and animals. Brownies will use their senses while enjoying a scavenger hunt in and around the museum.

Scout Day at the Brandywine Zoo

Enjoy an afternoon at the zoo during this special program just for scouts! There will be games, live animal encounters, and other activities all geared toward meeting scout badge requirements. Brandywine Zoo fun patch will be available for purchase.

Wonders of the Night Sky

All Girl Scout grade levels
Use telescopes, binoculars, and the naked eye to observe a crescent moon low in the west, Jupiter rising in Leo, Orion sinking in the south, and other celestial sights. Learn the secret of the North Star and constellations visible year-round. Join the ranks of Citizen Astronomers around the world by participating in the GLOBE at Night project to assess light pollution. If it is cloudy, we will observe the “virtual” sky in Mt. Cuba’s planetarium.

Letterboxing and Geocaching

Carve out your own personal stamp and explore the exciting world of letterboxing. Letterboxing is a unique combination of a treasure hunt, navigation, artistic expression and outdoor exploration. Then try your navigation skills to find a series of letterboxes hidden at DEEC. Experience a more technical treasure hunt with geocaching. Practice using a GPS and search the DEEC Garden for hidden treats.

Animals in an Estuary

Explore the salt marsh by investigating the plants and animals that call this habitat home. Learn the environmental importance of wetlands and be prepared to get muddy!

WHERE: Indian River Life-Saving Station at Delaware Seashore State Park, 25039 Coastal Hwy., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971
COST: $10 per girl.
NOTE: Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get muddy. Program will meet at the Indian River Life-Saving Station and scouts will need to be transported to the campground area. Most badge requirements will be met for the Junior Animal Habitats badge. Min 10/Max 25.

 

 

Bugs, Bugs Everywhere

Come have a Bug-tastic time exploring the world of insects through this interactive program. View insects from the museum collections, make your own insect craft, explore outside the museum and watch insects up close.

Go Native-Pollinators & Flowers

GS Brownie and Junior
Spend the afternoon at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center exploring the native plants in our Rain Garden and fields for native pollinators. Investigate how flowers are designed to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, beetles and moths. Discover the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly and other insects that share its milkweed host plant. Collect milkweed seeds and learn how to establish a Monarch garden in your yard or neighborhood.

Explore the ins and outs of historic Cooch-Dayett Mills and discover how water generated energy is used to run all its machines. Then harness the ultimate power source – the sun! Observe our star with a specially-filtered telescope, do a solar power experiment, construct a simple sundial, make your own solar print and use a solar oven.
